A week after the third big outage in less than 6 months, the tally of concurrent Skype users is about 500k below what we would have expected. A portion of the missing users may be attributable to normal seasonality, but the size and persistency of the gap indicates that there may be considerable long term damage.
As a rule of thumb, one concurrent user translates into 3 "real" Skype users worldwide (http://aaytch.com/pages/borderless/), so the damage could be up to 1.5 million Skype users that have simply disappeared. Why? For some, the lack of a plausible explanation for the outages from the company is sufficient reason to consider alternative communication platforms and carriers.
